Cordana leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cordana musae, which primarily affects banana plants. This pathogen targets the foliage, causing characteristic necrotic lesions that impair the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis. If left unmanaged, the infection can significantly reduce the overall health and yield potential of the banana crop.

The disease affects various species and cultivars within the Musa genus. It is particularly prevalent in tropical regions where banana production is intensive. Cordana musae often acts as a opportunistic pathogen, frequently appearing alongside other leaf spot diseases, such as Sigatoka, which complicates the health of the canopy and accelerates leaf deterioration.

The primary symptom of the disease is the appearance of distinct, oval-shaped or irregular spots on the leaf blades. These lesions are typically marked by a dark brown or black margin surrounding a lighter-colored necrotic center. Under high humidity, these spots expand rapidly and may coalesce, leading to extensive blighting of the leaves and premature senescence of the foliage.

The development and spread of Cordana musae are highly dependent on environmental conditions. High relative humidity and the presence of free moisture (such as dew or rainfall) on leaf surfaces are essential for spore germination and infection. Optimal growth temperatures range between 24°C and 28°C. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind currents and water splashes during heavy rain events.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it reduces the functional photosynthetic area, leading to thinner bunches and poor fruit filling. Effective management involves a combination of strategies:

• Removal and destruction of infected leaf debris to reduce inoculum sources;
• Ensuring adequate plant spacing to facilitate better air circulation;
