Corinectria is a genus of fungi responsible for significant necrotic diseases in woody plants. As a plant pathogen, it specifically targets the bark and vascular tissues of trees, disrupting the transport of nutrients and water, which ultimately leads to a gradual decline of the host plant.
The host range of Corinectria primarily includes various fruit-bearing trees, such as apple and pear, as well as several ornamental woody species. Infection typically occurs through natural openings in the bark, wounds caused by pruning, or physical damage resulting from frost, insects, or machinery, which serve as entry points for fungal spores.
Symptoms of the infection include the appearance of localized lesions or cankers on the bark surface. These spots are often discolored and may become sunken over time. As the disease progresses, the bark may crack or slough off, revealing the underlying woody tissue, which often shows signs of necrosis and potential colonization by the fungus.
The environmental conditions that favor the development of this disease include prolonged periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain-splashed droplets and wind facilitate the dispersal of spores from infected tissues to healthy parts of the tree or to neighboring plants, especially during active growth or after the dormancy phase.
