Description
Coriolopsis is a genus of wood-decay fungi within the Basidiomycota phylum, responsible for causing white rot in woody plants. These fungi are potent decomposers that enzymatically degrade lignin, which is a key component of wood structural integrity. While often found on dead wood, they frequently act as opportunistic pathogens for trees weakened by stress, age, or mechanical damage.
Various deciduous tree species are susceptible to Coriolopsis infections, particularly fruit-bearing trees such as apples and pears, as well as several forest hardwoods. The fungus typically gains entry into the host through wounds, such as those caused by frost cracking, sunscald, or improper pruning practices that leave the wood surface exposed to environmental elements.
The primary clinical sign of infection is the development of tough, corky, or leathery fruit bodies (conks) on the bark surface. Internally, the fungus decomposes the wood, turning it into a light-colored, fibrous mass. As the structural stability of the tree declines, it becomes highly prone to internal rot, which significantly increases the risk of structural failure and windthrow.
Disease development and spread are strongly correlated with high humidity and the presence of decomposing woody debris. The fungus disperses through airborne spores that germinate upon landing on damp, vulnerable wood tissue. Extended periods of rainfall and warm temperatures significantly accelerate the growth and colonization process of the fungal mycelium within the host's trunk.
Effective management strategies rely on rigorous sanitation and prophylactic care. It is essential to remove dead wood and debris from the orchard to eliminate spore reservoirs. Any pruning wounds must be properly treated with protective sealants or fungicides to prevent colonization. Furthermore, maintaining overall tree vigor through adequate fertilization and irrigation helps the plant develop natural resistance to fungal invasion.
