Coriolopsis gallica is a wood-decaying fungus belonging to the Polyporaceae family, recognized as a significant agent of white rot in various tree species. As a facultative parasite, it predominantly decomposes lignin and cellulose, leading to the structural disintegration of the woody tissue in both living and dead trees.

The fungus primarily targets hardwood species, including various oak, alder, and fruit tree varieties. It typically invades trees through existing wounds in the bark, areas damaged by environmental stressors, or through untreated pruning cuts, where the mycelium can easily establish itself and begin the decay process.

Diagnostic symptoms include the emergence of annual or perennial fruiting bodies on the trunk or exposed wood. These structures are often leathery, brownish to yellowish in color, with a distinctly porous underside. Internally, the wood becomes bleached, fibrous, and loses its mechanical integrity, significantly increasing the risk of structural failure.

Development and dissemination are highly favored by high ambient humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus releases vast quantities of spores, which are distributed by wind currents, seeking out favorable microclimates in bark crevices or fresh wounds on susceptible hosts. Dense, poorly ventilated stands are particularly at risk of rapid colonization.

Effective management and protection strategies are centered on sanitation and preventive care. Key measures involve the removal and proper disposal of infected woody debris to lower inoculum levels, the immediate treatment of pruning wounds with protective fungicides, and the implementation of maintenance practices that prevent tree stress and physical trauma to the trunk.
