Description
Coriolus (lat. Coriolus), often classified within the Trametes genus, is a type of wood-decay fungus belonging to the Polyporaceae family. In agronomy, it is identified as a pathogen causing white rot, which degrades the structural components of wood, primarily lignin and cellulose. While essential for nutrient cycling in nature, its presence on agricultural or landscape trees signifies a serious threat to their structural integrity and long-term survival.
This fungus typically attacks deciduous trees, with pome and stone fruit species being particularly susceptible. The infection pathway is almost exclusively through wounds, pruning cuts, frost cracks, or areas where the bark has been damaged or killed by environmental factors. Once the mycelium establishes itself within the host, it progressively spreads throughout the xylem, compromising the tree's vascular system.
The primary symptom of a Coriolus infection is the appearance of distinct, leathery fruiting bodies on the bark, usually arranged in overlapping, bracket-like tiers. These brackets are often multi-colored with concentric zones. Internally, the wood undergoes a transformation: it becomes light-colored, spongy, and brittle. This severe decay often leads to the loss of structural stability, resulting in branch breakage or the eventual collapse of the entire tree.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity and inadequate airflow are critical for the development and spread of Coriolus. The fungus produces vast quantities of spores that travel via wind, rain splash, or insects. Trees located in shady, poorly ventilated areas with stagnant moisture are at a higher risk of being colonized by the pathogen, especially if they are already stressed or neglected.
Management and prevention require an integrated approach. Essential practices include:
- Sanitary pruning of infected branches to remove the source of inoculum.
- Proper sealing of all wounds and pruning cuts with non-toxic, effective wood sealants.
- Promoting vigorous tree growth through appropriate fertilization and irrigation to strengthen the tree's natural defense mechanisms.
- Removal and destruction of any wood debris or stumps that could serve as a breeding ground for the fungus.
Early detection and persistent maintenance of the tree's physical health are the most effective strategies for preventing the establishment of this destructive wood-rotting disease.
