Description

Coronophora disease is a fungal infection caused by various species of the Coronophora genus. This pathogen is known as a bark-inhabiting fungus that acts as a necrotroph, attacking the cambium and xylem tissues, which eventually compromises the vascular system of the host plant and restricts essential nutrient flow.

The host range of these fungi includes a wide variety of deciduous trees, including maples, lindens, and various fruit-bearing species. The disease is particularly problematic in tree nurseries and young plantations where high humidity and close proximity of plants facilitate the rapid movement of fungal spores from one host to another.

The visual symptoms of the infection often manifest as localized necrotic patches on the bark. As the pathogen advances, small, dark, pimple-like fruiting bodies (perithecia) break through the bark surface. If left untreated, the affected bark may crack, dry out, and slough off, leading to girdling of the branch and subsequent dieback of the affected canopy parts.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and dissemination of Coronophora. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and mild temperatures provide the perfect medium for spore germination and colonization. Furthermore, trees that have suffered from winter frost cracks, sunscald, or improper pruning are significantly more susceptible to new infections.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical control. It is vital to prune and destroy any infected or dead wood promptly to remove the source of inoculum. Maintaining vigorous tree health through proper fertilization and watering, combined with protective fungicidal applications during the dormant season, is essential for keeping the disease under control in cultivated environments.
