Coronophora blight, caused by the fungus Coronophora gregaria, is a fungal disease that targets the bark and cambium of various woody plants. As a parasitic organism, it exploits the weakened tissues of trees, disrupting the essential flow of nutrients and often leading to the localized death of branches.

This pathogen primarily affects deciduous trees, including species such as maples, lindens, and poplars. It typically gains entry through bark wounds, frost cracks, sunscald areas, or improper pruning cuts that have not been sealed, making the tree vulnerable to colonizing fungal spores present in the environment.

Key symptoms of the disease include the appearance of small, clustered, dark-colored fruiting bodies (apothecia) on the bark surface. As the infection progresses, the affected bark tissue turns brown, cracks, and eventually dies. If left untreated, the blight can lead to significant dieback, severely impairing the overall health and visual appearance of the tree.

The spread of Coronophora gregaria is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus produces spores that are easily disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and insects. Wet weather cycles are particularly conducive to the germination and establishment of the disease on susceptible host plants.

Effective management and prevention strategies involve a combination of cultural and sanitary practices. Regular monitoring for early signs of infection is crucial. Once detected, infected branches must be pruned back to healthy wood and immediately destroyed to prevent further spore dispersal. Additionally, sterilizing pruning tools is essential, and applying protective wound dressings to large cuts helps minimize the points of entry for this and other fungal pathogens.
