The family Coronophoraceae represents a group of ascomycetous fungi that frequently act as pathogens or saprotrophs on various woody plants. These fungi invade the outer layers of tree bark, causing significant disruption to the physiological processes of the host and contributing to the gradual decline of the plant tissue.

The primary hosts for these fungi are various deciduous tree species found in forests, parks, and urban landscapes. By colonizing the cortical tissues and the cambium layer, the pathogen hinders the transport of nutrients and water, which ultimately leads to the weakening of the entire structure of the tree, especially in mature or stressed specimens.

Common symptoms of infection include the development of small, often dark, erumpent fruiting bodies on the bark surface. As the mycelium spreads, the bark may show signs of discoloration, longitudinal cracking, and localized necrosis. In advanced stages, large patches of bark may slough off, exposing the underlying woody tissue to secondary infections.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungi disperse through spores, which are typically spread by wind or rain splash during periods of wet weather. Poor ventilation in dense plantings significantly increases the risk of rapid epidemic spread within a tree population.

Effective management strategies focus on sanitation and preventative measures. Key steps include:

  • Regular inspection of trees for early signs of bark discoloration.
  • Pruning and destroying infected branches to reduce the spore load.
  • Maintaining tree vigor through proper watering and fertilization.
  • Applying protective fungicides to vulnerable areas during the active growth phase.

Biosecurity practices, such as sanitizing pruning tools between different trees, are essential to prevent the mechanical transmission of the pathogen. Consistent monitoring of environmental conditions and site hygiene can significantly mitigate the harmful effects of these fungal infections on valuable woody assets.
