Description
The Corticiaceae family contains a diverse group of basidiomycete fungi recognized as significant plant pathogens. These organisms cause various types of plant diseases, primarily characterized by root rots, stem necroses, and bark decay. As pathogens, they decompose plant tissues, often leading to systemic decline in both herbaceous and woody plants.
These fungi affect a wide range of host plants, including field crops, vegetables, ornamental species, and forestry trees. They are particularly aggressive in nursery environments and greenhouses where high density and environmental control can inadvertently favor fungal growth. Their ability to survive as saprotrophs in soil organic matter makes them persistent threats.
Symptoms often manifest as the formation of thin, crust-like or film-like fungal growths on the surface of stems or root crowns. Affected plants show signs of chlorosis, wilting, and stunted growth. In later stages, necrosis occurs at the base of the stem or root system, leading to structural collapse and tissue death, often accompanied by discoloration of the internal stem tissues.
The spread and development of Corticiaceae are heavily dictated by environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Persistent high humidity, lack of air circulation, and poorly drained soils are the primary drivers of infection. Under these conditions, the fungal mycelium can quickly colonize the root zone or lower stem, spreading through direct contact or soil moisture.
The economic impact of these pathogens is substantial, as they can cause significant yield loss and plant mortality. Management strategies focus on preventive measures: improving soil drainage, selecting resistant cultivars, and maintaining rigorous sanitation by removing infected plant debris. Chemical control using systemic fungicides can be effective if applied early in the infection cycle before severe tissue damage occurs.
