The order Corticiales includes various fungal species, many of which act as significant plant pathogens. These fungi are commonly associated with bark diseases and wood decay in both ornamental and agricultural plants. By secreting specialized enzymes, they degrade structural components of plant tissues, leading to necrosis and general decline.
As pathogens, these fungi typically manifest as crust-like or membrane-like structures on the surface of branches, stems, or trunks. They function as both parasites, attacking living tissue, and saprotrophs, consuming dead organic matter. Their presence disrupts the plant's vascular integrity, effectively cutting off the supply of water and nutrients to the upper parts of the canopy.
Symptoms are often distinct and observable during the growing season. The most frequent signs of infection include:
- Development of irregular leathery or powdery patches on the bark.
- Bark cracking and deep lesions that expose the underlying wood.
- Visible fungal fruiting bodies appearing after rainy periods.
- Branch dieback and reduced vigor of the host plant.
Environmental conditions are crucial for the development and spread of Corticiales. High humidity, mild temperatures, and poor airflow are the primary triggers that allow fungal spores to germinate and colonize new hosts. Inadequate orchard sanitation, such as leaving pruning debris on the ground, significantly increases the risk of local outbreaks.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural controls involve maintaining proper spacing to ensure airflow, disinfecting pruning tools to prevent mechanical transmission, and promptly removing infected wood. Chemical control is achieved through the use of protective fungicides, which should be applied preventively or at the earliest signs of infection to stop the progression of the disease.
