Corticium disease represents a group of fungal infections caused by Corticium species, which significantly impact global agriculture. These basidiomycete fungi are known for their destructive ability to colonize various hosts, leading to substantial yield losses in both field and garden environments.
The host range is extensive, including major crops like rice, potatoes, and various cereals. The pathogen typically attacks the base of the stems or leaves, disrupting the vascular system and preventing the effective transport of nutrients and water throughout the plant, which often results in wilting or necrosis.
The primary clinical signs of an infestation include the development of white or brown fungal mats, which often appear like a felt-like covering on the surface of infected tissues. As the infection progresses, affected plant parts turn yellow, become brittle, and eventually rot, significantly reducing the overall harvest quality.
Environmental factors, particularly high relative humidity and warm temperatures, are critical for the rapid spread of Corticium.
