The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Corticium confine, a member of the Basidiomycota phylum. It functions primarily as a saprotrophic or weakly parasitic organism that thrives on the bark and woody tissues of both deciduous and coniferous trees. In forestry and horticulture, this fungus is recognized for its role in degrading wood structure, particularly in trees under stress or those with compromised bark integrity.
The host range of this fungus includes various broad-leaved trees and several orchard species. It often establishes itself on mature trees where environmental factors have weakened the protective bark layer. By colonizing these areas, the fungus disrupts the transport of nutrients and water, progressively affecting the overall physiological state of the host plant.
Symptoms of Corticium confine infection are characterized by the appearance of thin, crust-like or membrane-like fungal growths on the surface of branches and trunks. These patches can range in color from white to yellowish-tan. As the infection progresses, the underlying bark becomes soft and necrotic, eventually peeling away to reveal decaying wood tissue, which is a diagnostic sign of the pathogen's presence.
The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on humidity and moisture levels. High humidity, poor air circulation within the canopy, and the presence of dead organic material provide an ideal substrate for the fungus to reproduce. Spores are primarily dispersed via wind and rainwater, settling into bark fissures or wounds created by pruning and climatic injuries.
The economic and ecological impact involves the gradual dieback of branches and potential long-term loss of tree vigor. Prevention and control strategies should prioritize the following:
