The fungus acts as a symbiotic partner for forest trees. It establishes an ectomycorrhizal connection where the fungal mycelium wraps around the root tips of trees, facilitating the exchange of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen from the soil for carbohydrates provided by the host tree.
This organism is commonly found in temperate woodlands, particularly in association with broad-leaved or coniferous trees. Its development depends heavily on the presence of a healthy forest soil structure and a mature root system of the host plant, which provides the necessary carbon source.
Symptoms of its presence are restricted to the emergence of mushrooms in the autumn. The fruit bodies have a characteristic smooth surface and an aroma often described as sweet or cheesy. There is no evidence of tissue necrosis, wilting, or any other signs of infection on the host tree.
