Agronomical note: It is critical to clarify that Cortinarius anomalus, commonly known as the anomalous webcap, is not a plant pathogen or a disease-causing agent for agricultural crops. Within the scientific classification of fungi, it is recognized as a mycorrhizal species that establishes symbiotic relationships with the root systems of various forest trees.

The fungus does not inflict harm on plants. Instead, it forms ectomycorrhizae, where the fungal hyphae envelop plant roots, creating a biological exchange system. The tree provides the fungus with sugars produced via photosynthesis, while the fungus assists the plant in acquiring water, essential minerals, and phosphorus from the surrounding soil matrix.

The macroscopic characteristics of the anomalous webcap include a cap ranging from 3 to 8 centimeters, often displaying brownish or grayish tones with violet hues on the stem or gills in younger specimens. The presence of a web-like veil, known as the cortina, is a diagnostic feature that covers the gills before the spores are released.

The development of Cortinarius anomalus is strictly dependent on the presence of woody hosts and specific soil conditions. It thrives in acidic to neutral soils in coniferous and deciduous forests. The mycelium plays an important role in soil nutrient cycling, decomposing organic debris, and improving the overall tilth and biological activity of the forest floor.

Since the anomalous webcap is beneficial for tree vitality, no chemical or physical control measures are necessary. It is considered a non-pest organism in agricultural and forestry contexts. Its presence in a managed landscape or forest patch is generally an indicator of good soil health and the presence of natural, healthy symbiotic networks between trees and soil microorganisms.
