Description
Yellow-gilled webcap (lat. Cortinarius delibutus) is a species of fungus that is not a plant pathogen, but rather a beneficial mycorrhizal partner for various tree species. In an agronomic context, especially concerning shelterbelts and forest plantations, it serves as a bio-indicator of soil health and forest ecosystem vitality.
The fungus functions through a symbiotic relationship known as ectomycorrhiza. Its mycelium colonizes the root zones of deciduous trees, effectively extending the root surface area. This association allows trees to absorb essential water and nutrients more efficiently, which is particularly vital for the resilience of trees in edge environments and during periods of drought.
Regarding its development, the fungus thrives in moist, shaded environments with well-developed forest litter. It appears primarily during late summer and autumn when humidity levels are high. It is commonly found in association with birch and alder, which are frequent components of riparian and protective tree belts in agricultural landscapes.
Identification of the fruiting bodies includes several distinct features:
- A distinctly slimy or viscid cap, usually yellowish or ochre in color.
- Yellowish-white gills that eventually turn rusty brown due to spore accumulation.
- The presence of a cobweb-like partial veil, or cortina, which is characteristic of the genus Cortinarius.
No protective or control measures are required for this species, as it poses no threat to agricultural crops. Farmers and forest managers should maintain soil organic matter to support mycorrhizal diversity. The indiscriminate use of fungicides should be avoided in areas adjacent to forest belts, as these chemicals can disrupt the essential symbiotic relationships that support long-term tree growth and soil stability.
