The Gassy webcap (Cortinarius traganus) is a basidiomycete fungus belonging to the Cortinariaceae family. In the context of forestry and plant health, it is primarily recognized for its mycorrhizal association with various coniferous tree species, particularly within forest ecosystems.

The biological nature of this fungus is symbiotic. It forms an ectomycorrhizal network with the roots of host trees, aiding in nutrient uptake. While not considered a traditional plant pathogen, excessive colonization in forest nurseries can alter the root environment, potentially stressing young seedlings if soil conditions are poor.

The visual symptoms of its presence include the emergence of large, lilac-colored fruiting bodies that emit a distinct, pungent, acetylene-like odor. The stipe often exhibits a characteristic web-like cortina, which is a key morphological feature for identification in the field.
