Corynelia leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete fungus Corynelia jamaicensis. This pathogen is primarily associated with members of the Podocarpaceae family, notably the genus Podocarpus. It is recognized as a significant parasite in tropical and subtropical regions where these coniferous plants are grown for ornamental purposes.

The primary symptom of the infection is the appearance of distinct, hard, black stromatic structures known as perithecia on the leaf surfaces. These fungal structures tend to cluster together, causing visible swelling, deformation, and necrotic spots on the foliage. As the disease progresses, the infected areas become chlorotic and eventually die off.

The development of Corynelia jamaicensis is heavily influenced by high humidity and precipitation patterns, which facilitate spore discharge and germination. The fungus spreads through the dispersal of ascospores via wind and splashing water, allowing it to move rapidly through dense plantings or nurseries where moisture remains trapped on the leaf surface for extended periods.
