Description

The order Coryneliales consists of specific ascomycete fungi known to parasitize the bark and branches of various woody plants. These fungi are distinguished by their black, stromatal fruiting bodies that emerge through the plant's surface, often signaling a significant systemic infection within the host tissue.

These pathogens primarily target conifer species, such as members of the Pinaceae family. The fungus invades the living bark, forming structures that interfere with nutrient transport and water circulation, eventually leading to the localized decline of the affected branches or the entire tree.

Symptoms of the disease include the appearance of distinct, hard, black stromatic growths on the branches, which can eventually cause bark cracking and necrotization. These external signs often lead to resin flow and yellowing of the needles distal to the infection site due to restricted sap flow.

The spread of Coryneliales is heavily dependent on microclimatic conditions, particularly high humidity and prolonged moisture on plant surfaces. Dense canopies and stagnant air circulation significantly increase the risk of infection, as these conditions are ideal for the development and spore dispersal of the fungi.

Control measures are centered on rigorous sanitation, which involves the pruning and destruction of infected branches to remove the source of inoculum. Maintaining adequate plant spacing and promoting airflow are essential preventive practices, complemented by the timely application of fungicides in nurseries and young plantations.
