Description

Causal agent and disease type. Corynespora leaf spot is caused by the fungus Corynespora torulosa, a polyphagous pathogen capable of infecting numerous crops. It is classified as an opportunistic fungal disease that primarily affects leaves but can also colonize stems and fruits. The fungus is well-adapted to surviving in adverse conditions, persisting in crop debris and contaminated soil, making it a persistent threat to agricultural productivity.

Host plants and damage. The pathogen has a wide host range, including tropical fruits like papaya and banana, as well as several vegetable crops such as tomatoes and cucumbers. The primary damage involves the reduction of the plant's leaf area, leading to severe defoliation. This decrease in photosynthetic capacity results in stunted growth, lower crop yields, and, in severe cases, the complete death of the plant due to systemic weakness and secondary infections.

Symptoms and signs. The disease starts as small, necrotic spots that often expand into larger lesions with a characteristic yellowish halo or concentric rings. These spots may merge, covering large parts of the leaf tissue and causing it to wither and die prematurely. On fruits, the fungus causes circular or irregular lesions that can develop into deep pits or rot, significantly reducing the commercial value of the produce.

Development and spread. Corynespora torulosa thrives in warm and humid climates, with optimal disease development occurring at temperatures between 25°C and 30°C and high humidity levels. The spores (conidia) are easily disseminated by wind currents, rain splash, and irrigation water. Dense canopy growth and poor aeration in fields or greenhouses exacerbate the spread, allowing the fungus to cycle rapidly through the crop population.

Control and prevention measures. Effective management of the disease relies on an integrated approach to minimize fungal inoculum and plant susceptibility:

  • Sanitation by removing and destroying all infected plant materials to reduce the source of spores.
  • Implementing wide crop rotations with non-host species to interrupt the pathogen life cycle.
  • Providing adequate plant spacing to facilitate air circulation and lower local humidity.
  • Applying preventive and curative fungicide sprays during periods of high disease pressure.
  • Selecting and planting resistant or tolerant crop cultivars where available.
