Chestnut coryneum blight is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Coryneum castaneicola. It primarily affects various species of chestnut trees, causing necrotic damage to the bark and stems. This disease is known to significantly weaken the vitality of the host tree, eventually leading to branch dieback and reduced fruit production if left unmanaged.
The fungus functions as a wound parasite, meaning it enters the tree through cracks in the bark, pruning wounds, or areas damaged by insects. Once inside, the mycelium colonizes the cambium and xylem, disrupting the vascular system and preventing the flow of essential water and nutrients to the upper parts of the tree canopy.
Typical symptoms include the development of dark, sunken lesions on the branches. As the pathogen advances, the bark may split, revealing the necrotic wood beneath. Under high humidity conditions, the fungus produces small, black fruiting bodies that emerge through the bark surface, serving as the primary source for further spreading of spores within the orchard or forest area.
The environmental factors most favorable for the spread of Coryneum castaneicola include high humidity, prolonged rainy periods, and mild temperatures. Spores are easily disseminated by wind-blown rain and contaminated tools. The ability of the fungus to survive in dead bark tissue allows it to persist in the environment from one season to the next, posing a constant risk.
To control and prevent the spread of the disease, growers should follow these practices:
- Prune and destroy all infected branches immediately upon detection.
- Sanitize all pruning tools with alcohol or bleach after each use.
- Apply protective copper-based fungicides during the dormant season.
- Minimize bark wounds and protect trees from mechanical injury.
- Ensure proper tree spacing to allow for adequate airflow and rapid drying of the canopy.
