Coscinodiscales is an order of centric diatoms characterized by a distinct silica cell wall. While not pathogenic to plants in a traditional sense, they are recognized in agricultural science as major contaminants in water recycling systems, hydroponic setups, and precision irrigation networks.

The primary concern regarding these organisms is their role in biomass accumulation. When these algae thrive in nutrient-rich irrigation solutions, they compete with plants for essential minerals, specifically silicon and nitrogen, and disrupt the chemical equilibrium of the growing media.

Symptoms of infestation include the presence of slimy, brown deposits inside plumbing components, emitters, and reservoir walls. In severe cases, the proliferation of these organisms leads to the clogging of fine irrigation nozzles, causing uneven water distribution and subsequent plant growth retardation.

The development of these diatoms is triggered by environmental conditions such as high nutrient loading, elevated water temperatures, and exposure to artificial or natural light within the plumbing infrastructure.
