Coscinodiscophyceae, commonly known as centric diatoms, are a significant class of algae that can adversely affect agricultural environments. While they are not pathogens in the sense of infecting plants directly, their proliferation in irrigation ponds, hydroponic systems, and water-logged soils creates an environment that negatively impacts crop growth and agricultural productivity.
The causal factor for this issue is the bloom of algal biomass resulting from environmental triggers. The type of impact is categorized as environmental stress, which causes metabolic strain in plants by restricting nutrient uptake and causing hypoxia in the root zone due to the physical barrier formed by the algal colonies.
Crops affected include those in hydroponic setups and greenhouse vegetables grown in substrates with high moisture levels. Symptoms include the emergence of dense, brownish or greenish films on the surface of the soil or growing media, accompanied by signs of wilting or slow growth in seedlings, often due to clogged pores and nutrient depletion.
The conditions favorable for the development of these organisms are high levels of light, elevated temperatures, and an abundance of mineral nutrients in the water, a state known as eutrophication. The lack of proper water circulation and filtration allows these diatoms to colonize and form permanent mats that are difficult to eradicate once established.
The economic harm includes reduced yields, increased maintenance costs for clogged irrigation nozzles, and the secondary development of root rot due to stagnant water conditions. Prevention involves maintaining water quality, regular cleaning of irrigation lines, using UV filtration systems, and ensuring proper drainage to avoid water accumulation.
