Description
Coscinodiscus is a genus of large centric diatoms that can act as a biological constraint in various aquatic plant production systems and aquaculture. While primarily a marine or freshwater planktonic organism, its excessive proliferation in artificial water environments is often treated similarly to an infestation or biological disease.
The causative agent belongs to the phylum Bacillariophyta, characterized by silica-based frustules. These organisms compete directly with higher plants for nutrients, light, and dissolved CO2. In dense populations, they disrupt the chemical balance of the growing medium, leading to potential nutrient deficiencies for the primary crop.
The species primarily affects plants grown in hydroponic and aquaponic setups, as well as nurseries utilizing open or recycled water systems. The damage is not caused by direct infection of plant tissue, but rather by the degradation of the root zone environment and mechanical interference with gas exchange.
Symptoms include the formation of brownish, diatom-rich biofilms on roots and substrates. This creates a physical barrier that restricts water uptake and root respiration. If left untreated, the accumulation of organic matter from dead diatom cells can promote the growth of secondary bacterial or fungal pathogens.
