Description

Cosmospora is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Hypocreales, which acts as a pathogen causing significant bark and wood decay in various woody plants. These fungi are often associated with the decline of ornamental trees, fruit orchards, and vineyard stems, acting as opportunistic pathogens that invade host tissues through wounds or natural openings.

The host range of Cosmospora includes a wide variety of deciduous trees, shrubs, and grapevines. The fungus typically colonizes the bark and cambium layers, where it interferes with the plant's vascular integrity. By disrupting the flow of nutrients and water, it progressively weakens the host, leading to branch dieback and, in severe cases, the death of the entire plant.

Key symptoms include the development of bright orange to reddish, pinhead-sized perithecia (fruiting bodies) clustered on the bark surface. Infected areas often exhibit sunken, necrotic lesions, accompanied by deep cracking of the bark and discoloration of the underlying wood. As the infection progresses, the structural stability of the plant tissue is compromised.

Favorable conditions for Cosmospora development include high humidity, moderate temperatures, and lack of aeration in the plant canopy. The spores are primarily dispersed via splashing water, wind, or human activity, such as pruning with unsterilized tools. These factors facilitate the establishment of the pathogen, especially in trees already stressed by drought or freeze damage.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling Cosmospora. Pruning is the primary method of mitigation: all infected material must be removed and destroyed to prevent spore buildup. It is crucial to sanitize tools between cuts. Furthermore, applying copper-based fungicides during dormancy and maintaining plant vigor through appropriate fertilization are effective ways to prevent and minimize disease impact.
