Cosmospora aurantiicola is a fungal species belonging to the class Ascomycetes. While it is often studied for its role as a parasite of scale insects, it is also recognized as an agent that can affect the health of various host plants. In agricultural settings, it is primarily noted for its presence on the bark and woody parts of trees in warm, humid climates.
The host range is predominantly focused on citrus trees and various ornamental plants grown in greenhouse conditions or tropical environments. The fungus is often associated with the presence of scale insects, which provide a substrate for the fungus, but the associated mycelial growth can extend onto the living plant tissues, causing localized stress.
