Cosmospora flammea (synonym Nectria flammea) is a fungal organism that acts as a pathogen on woody plants, particularly citrus species. It is frequently observed in close association with scale insects, where it colonizes both the insects and the underlying plant tissues, leading to bark necrosis and general tree decline.
The causative agent belongs to the order Hypocreales and is characterized by the production of striking, bright orange to reddish perithecia on the surface of infected bark. These structures serve as the primary source of inoculum, releasing spores that are easily spread by rain splash and wind currents within an orchard environment.
Citrus trees are the primary hosts for this fungus. The pathogen typically initiates infection in areas previously damaged by sap-sucking insects. By utilizing the honey-dew and the damaged vascular tissues, the fungus gains entry into the bark, where it expands its mycelial network, effectively disrupting the tree's transport systems.
Symptoms are often easy to identify due to the vibrant orange fungal structures appearing on the twigs and main branches. As the infection progresses, the bark may crack, become necrotic, and eventually peel off. This leads to the dieback of affected twigs, premature foliage loss, and a significant reduction in overall tree vigor and fruit yield.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the disease spread, with high humidity and moderate temperatures being the primary drivers. Poor orchard sanitation, lack of pruning, and dense canopy structures contribute to micro-climates that favor fungal growth and sporulation, making the pathogen difficult to manage without consistent intervention.
Effective management strategies rely on a multi-pronged approach to minimize disease impact:
