Description
Cotylidia is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Hymenochaetales, which can act as opportunistic pathogens in various plant species. While primarily known for their saprotrophic role in decomposing wood, certain species within this group under specific environmental conditions can infect weakened plants, leading to significant decay of roots and stem bases.
The disease is caused by the colonization of plant tissues by fungal mycelium. As a type of wood-decay fungus, it aggressively breaks down structural components of the plant, such as cellulose and lignin. This process often begins at the crown or root collar, particularly in plants that have experienced physiological stress or environmental damage.
Symptoms of a Cotylidia infection include the emergence of small, fan-shaped or funnel-shaped fruit bodies on the surface of the infected tissue. These structures are often whitish to tan in color. In addition to these visible signs, the internal tissues may become soft, discolored, and fragile, leading to structural instability of the plant stem.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity, poor soil drainage, and lack of air circulation are critical for the spread of the pathogen. Spores are primarily dispersed through water splashing or wind, settling on susceptible tissues where they germinate once adequate moisture is present, thereby establishing a new infection site.
The impact of Cotylidia on plant health is characterized by inhibited growth, nutrient deficiency, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. Effective control requires an integrated approach, including strict sanitation practices to remove diseased plant material, optimizing irrigation to prevent waterlogging, and applying appropriate fungicides to inhibit mycelial expansion.
