Description
The pale leather fungus (Cotylidia pallida) is a basidiomycete fungus belonging to the Stereaceae family. In agricultural and forestry contexts, it is primarily recognized as a decomposer of organic matter; however, it can occasionally act as an opportunistic pathogen. It is known to cause structural degradation of wood, typically associated with white rot decay processes.
This fungus mainly affects various woody plants, including trees, ornamental shrubs, and forest species. While it thrives on decaying logs, stumps, and fallen branches, it can colonize living plants that have existing wounds, bark damage, or significantly weakened physiological states due to environmental stress or poor maintenance.
The primary diagnostic symptoms include the development of thin, leathery, fan-shaped or funnel-shaped fruit bodies that are pale, whitish, or cream-colored. As the fungus infects the host, it causes the tissues to soften, lose their structural integrity, and eventually disintegrate. This leads to internal wood decay, which is often difficult to detect until advanced stages.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Cotylidia pallida. High humidity levels, prolonged rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide ideal conditions for sporulation and mycelial growth. Spores are primarily dispersed through wind and splashing water, landing on susceptible surfaces and entering through cracks or wounds.
The harmfulness of this fungus is linked to the progressive weakening of the host plant's internal structure. To prevent the establishment and spread of the disease, consider the following control strategies:
- Regularly remove and dispose of dead or decaying wood from the garden.
- Ensure proper pruning of branches to maintain plant health and structural balance.
- Seal large pruning cuts or mechanical bark wounds to prevent fungal entry.
- Apply preventative fungicide treatments if neighboring plants show signs of high fungal activity.
