While it is primarily found in wild forest ecosystems, its presence in orchards or managed landscapes often indicates the accumulation of dead or dying woody matter, which can serve as a reservoir for other pathogenic threats.
The biological action of this fungus is centered on the degradation of organic compounds, specifically lignin and cellulose within dead timber. By secreting extracellular enzymes, the mycelium breaks down the physical structure of the wood. This process is essentially the first step in natural decomposition, although it can compromise the structural integrity of trees if they are already in a state of physiological decline.
Typical host plants include various deciduous trees, particularly those that have suffered from frost cracks, mechanical injuries, or age-related decay. While it does not actively attack healthy, vigorous tree tissue, it opportunistically colonizes wounds or deadwood sections, such as snags or decaying stumps, which are abundant in neglected garden environments.
Symptoms of colonization are typically characterized by the appearance of small, sessile, kidney-shaped to fan-shaped fruiting bodies protruding from the bark or wood surface. These fruiting bodies are generally pale, brownish, or yellowish. The underlying wood typically shows signs of softening, discoloration, and a significant loss of structural density, becoming brittle over time.
Effective management and protection against wood-decaying fungi depend on rigorous sanitary practices to maintain tree health. Essential control measures include:
- regular pruning of dead or diseased branches to eliminate entry points;
- proper disposal of wood debris and rotting stumps to remove fungal habitats;
- protecting tree trunks from mechanical damage;
- applying wound dressings to fresh cuts to prevent spore colonization;
- maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation.
