Crepidotus variabilis is a saprotrophic fungus often found on decaying wood of deciduous trees. While it primarily functions as a decomposer of dead organic matter, it can colonize stressed or weakened living trees, acting as a secondary agent in wood degradation processes.

This fungus typically impacts various deciduous species, including apple, pear, and diverse forest trees. It establishes itself on bark and exposed wood, often thriving in environments with high humidity and limited air circulation, such as dense orchards or poorly managed woodlots.

Identification of Crepidotus variabilis relies on observing its distinct, small, white to cream-colored, fan-shaped fruiting bodies. These bodies appear in clusters on the surface of branches or trunks. Internally, the fungus secretes enzymes that break down lignin and cellulose, leading to white rot, which makes the wood soft and spongy.

The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly moisture availability. Spores are disseminated via wind and rain, infecting the host through wounds, cracks, or necrotic areas on the bark. Damp, cool weather significantly accelerates the colonization rate.

The damage caused by this fungus can be significant if the host tree is already suffering from drought, mechanical damage, or pest infestation. To prevent the spread and mitigate impact, arborists and farmers should focus on:

  • Strict sanitation practices, including the removal of dead or infected wood.
