Description
Witches' broom disease is a severe fungal infection caused by the basidiomycete Crinipellis perniciosa. This pathogen is responsible for significant economic losses in the cocoa industry, as it targets the meristematic tissues of the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao) during its development.
The disease primarily impacts cocoa production, as it affects vegetative shoots, flower cushions, and fruit pods. Once a tree is infected, the fungus disrupts the natural hormonal balance, leading to the development of characteristic vegetative clusters known as "brooms."
Visible symptoms include the abnormal proliferation of branches, which appear as dense, tangled clusters of shoots. Additionally, infected pods become necrotic and hardened, rendering the cocoa beans inside unusable. These symptoms typically appear during the wet season when fungal activity is at its peak.
The development and spread of Crinipellis perniciosa are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and frequent rainfall. These factors facilitate the production of basidiocarps, which release spores that are easily dispersed by wind and splashing raindrops onto susceptible plant parts.
Management strategies for this disease focus on the physical removal of affected tissues through pruning and the elimination of diseased pods to reduce the inoculum density. Modern agrotechnical approaches also emphasize the selection of genetically resistant cultivars and the maintenance of canopy hygiene to improve air circulation.
