Description
Cristinia is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Corticiales. While many species are known for their saprotrophic role in decomposing forest debris, some strains act as pathogens, causing decay in living plant tissues and woody components. Understanding their role is vital for maintaining plant health in orchards and nurseries.
The disease is categorized as a type of decay or root rot. The pathogen invades the host via mechanical injuries or natural openings in the roots and stems. Once established, the fungus colonizes the internal tissues, disrupting the transport of nutrients and water, which ultimately leads to the physiological weakening of the host plant.
Host plants commonly include various woody species, fruit-bearing trees, and some landscape shrubs. Plants that are already stressed due to environmental factors or poor management are significantly more susceptible to Cristinia infections, making them prime targets for the spreading mycelium.
Symptoms of the infection include the formation of fungal mats, discoloration of wood, softening of tissue, and progressive wilting. As the decay spreads, leaves may become chlorotic, shoot growth slows down, and in severe cases, the plant may experience total collapse due to the destruction of the vascular system.
