Description
The fungus Cristulariella depraedans (syn. Cristulariella pyramidalis) is the causative agent of a specific leaf spot disease primarily affecting maple trees. This pathogen belongs to the group of fungi that typically cause premature foliage senescence and necrosis during the active growing season.
The disease is characterized by the appearance of numerous small, circular, brown to gray spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots coalesce, leading to large necrotic zones and eventual tissue collapse. A diagnostic feature is the presence of small, pyramid-shaped fruiting structures on the underside of the leaves, which produce spores that spread the infection.
Development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures during the summer months. Spores are easily disseminated by wind and rain splash, allowing the pathogen to travel throughout the tree canopy. Poor air circulation in dense plantings significantly exacerbates the spread of the disease.
The harmfulness of Cristulariella depraedans lies in the premature loss of leaves, which reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity and weakens its vigor. In nursery settings, severe infections can stunt growth and increase the susceptibility of seedlings to subsequent environmental stress or opportunistic pests.
