Description
The causative agent of this disease is the rust fungus Cronartium comptoniae. This pathogen is a heteroecious fungus, meaning it requires two unrelated host species to complete its life cycle: a pine tree and a secondary host, typically plants in the Comptonia or Myrica genera.
The disease primarily impacts various pine species, proving most damaging to nursery stock and young forest plantations. When young pines are infected, the fungus causes structural damage to the main stem, rendering the trees commercially and ecologically stunted or prone to snapping.
Distinctive symptoms include the development of swelling or galls on the main trunk or branches. During the sporulation phase, these galls rupture to reveal columns or "blisters" that are bright orange or yellow in color, which are filled with aeciospores that become airborne.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of the disease. High humidity and prolonged wet periods are essential for spore germination and infection of the pine tissue. Once established, the fungus grows perennially, slowly girdling the stem over several seasons.
The damage caused by this pathogen is significant due to the disruption of water and nutrient transport. As the fungal mycelium grows, it kills the cambium, creating deep cankers. This weakening often leads to secondary attacks by insects or mortality from environmental stress.
Management and prevention strategies focus on breaking the infection cycle. Recommendations include removing intermediate hosts from the vicinity of pine plantations and implementing strict sanitation practices in nurseries to ensure that infected seedlings are not planted in healthy areas.
