Description
The causal agent of this disease is the rust fungus Cronartium conigenum, an obligate parasite that requires two different hosts to complete its life cycle: pine trees and oak trees. This heteroecious nature makes the management of the disease particularly complex, as both hosts must be present for the fungus to spread effectively.
The primary hosts affected by this pathogen are various pine species, where the fungus focuses its impact on the developing cones. The disease specifically targets the reproductive organs, leading to significant morphological changes and rendering the cones sterile, which directly affects the regeneration potential of the pine stands.
Symptoms include massive swelling and distortion of the cones. During the infection phase, bright orange aecia erupt through the surface of the scales, releasing large quantities of spores.
