Description

The causal agent of this disease is the heteroecious rust fungus Cronartium pini. This pathogen is a serious threat to pine forests, specifically targeting the stem and branches of the tree, which leads to the disruption of the vascular system and eventually to the death of the affected plant tissues.

The primary hosts of this fungus are various species of the genus Pinus, most notably the Scots pine. To complete its life cycle, the fungus requires an alternate host, such as species from the Vincetoxicum genus. The presence of this alternate host in the vicinity is a critical factor for the epidemic development of the disease.

The main symptoms of the infection are the development of swellings (galls) on the bark and intense resin exudation. As the disease progresses, orange-yellow blisters filled with aeciospores break through the bark, which is a diagnostic sign of the fungal activity. These lesions cause the cessation of nutrient flow, leading to crown yellowing and eventual dieback.

The infection spread depends on meteorological conditions, with humid and mild weather providing optimal environments for spore germination and dispersal. Wind currents carry basidiospores over long distances, allowing the fungus to colonize new areas, which makes the management of this disease difficult on a landscape scale.

Control strategies for Cronartium pini focus on forest sanitation, including the prompt removal of infected trees to reduce the source of inoculum. Silvicultural practices, such as avoiding the proximity of pines to alternate hosts and selecting resistant cultivars, are considered the most effective measures for reducing the prevalence and impact of this disease in commercial forestry.
