Cronartium pyriforme is a species of parasitic fungus known for causing blister rust in various pine species. As an obligate biotroph, it requires specific host trees and intermediate hosts to complete its complex life cycle, significantly impacting both juvenile and mature conifer populations in forest environments.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are pine trees, particularly the Scots pine. The fungus infects the stems and branches of the tree, colonizing the phloem and cambium tissues. This colonization results in significant physiological damage, disrupting nutrient transport and eventually killing the affected parts or the entire tree.

Symptoms of the infection are quite distinct and include the development of spindle-shaped or pear-shaped galls (swellings) on the stems of young pines.
