Description
The white-egg bird's nest fungus (Crucibulum laeve) is a saprophytic fungus belonging to the Agaricaceae family. In an agricultural context, it is not considered a crop pathogen but rather a decomposer that thrives on decaying plant material, dead wood, and organic mulch with high moisture content.
The fungus is characterized by its unique fruiting bodies, which resemble tiny, miniature cups (birds' nests) containing egg-like structures called peridioles. These peridioles house the spores and are dispersed by the physical impact of rain droplets, which splash them out of the cup, allowing the fungus to propagate across damp organic surfaces.
Symptoms of its presence include the sudden appearance of these tiny cup-shaped structures on wet soil surfaces, straw mulch, wooden fence posts, or plant debris. While it does not attack living crops, its proliferation indicates an accumulation of decaying organic matter and sustained high humidity, which might favor the development of actual plant pathogens in the same environment.
Ideal conditions for Crucibulum laeve include high humidity, shade, and an abundance of lignin-rich substrate. It is frequently observed in greenhouses or poorly ventilated vegetable beds where moisture is trapped within mulch layers, providing the necessary conditions for its life cycle to persist and expand throughout the growing season.
Control measures primarily focus on sanitation and environment management to inhibit fungal growth. Recommended practices include:
- Removing excessive rotting debris and stagnant organic matter from the garden beds.
- Improving air circulation to dry out the surface of the soil and mulch.
- Treating wooden stakes or structures with rot-resistant agents.
- Applying only fully decomposed organic matter as fertilizer or mulch.
