Crumenulopsis is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota phylum, responsible for causing significant necrosis and canker diseases in various coniferous species. The most notable pathogen in this group is Crumenulopsis sororia, which primarily targets the bark tissues of pine trees, leading to severe physiological damage.

The host range for this disease is mainly limited to the Pinus genus, with Scots pine and Weymouth pine being particularly susceptible. The infection often affects plantations that are under stress, either due to over-density, unfavorable soil conditions, or extreme climate fluctuations.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as depressed necrotic patches on the bark of twigs and branches. As the infection progresses, these areas develop into sunken cankers often accompanied by resin flow. During damp conditions, small, brown, cup-shaped apothecia (fruiting bodies) emerge on the bark surface, confirming the presence of the pathogen.

The development and spread of the fungus are favored by high humidity, cool temperatures, and moisture levels that allow fungal spores to germinate effectively. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and rain splash, infecting healthy tissues through microscopic cracks or wounds caused by insects or weather damage.

The impact of Crumenulopsis on forest health is substantial, as it leads to twig dieback, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of the entire tree. Economic losses in forestry occur due to timber devaluation and the costs associated with managing diseased plantations.

Control and prevention strategies focus on silvicultural management. This involves implementing regular sanitary thinning, removing and destroying heavily infected trees, and ensuring that planting density is managed to facilitate airflow, which reduces the micro-environmental humidity suitable for fungal growth.
