Crumenulopsis canker (Crumenulopsis sororia) is a destructive fungal pathogen that causes stem and branch cankers on various coniferous tree species. The fungus primarily targets the bark tissues, disrupting the tree's vascular system and causing localized necrosis that can eventually lead to the girdling of stems and branches.
The primary hosts of this fungus are trees within the genus Pinus, with Scots pine being particularly susceptible. The disease tends to infect trees that are already suffering from environmental stress, such as poor soil nutrient status, high planting density, or harsh microclimatic conditions that limit tree vigor and defense mechanisms.
The characteristic symptoms of the infection include the formation of sunken cankers on the bark, accompanied by heavy resin flow from the necrotic lesions. As the infection progresses, the bark dies and sloughs off, exposing the underlying wood. During the reproductive stage, the fungus produces small, dark apothecia, which appear as tiny cup-shaped structures on the affected bark surface.
Environmental factors play a crucial role in the development and spread of the disease. Cool, wet weather conditions provide the ideal environment for spore germination and infection. The pathogen spreads mainly through wind-borne spores and rain splash, allowing it to colonize healthy parts of the host or neighboring trees efficiently throughout the growing season.
The impact of Crumenulopsis sororia on forest stands is significant, as it leads to stunted growth, distorted stems, and dieback of the canopy. Infected trees are also much more susceptible to secondary attacks by bark beetles and other wood-boring insects, which often finalize the destruction of the forest stand if effective management actions are not taken.
