Crusty leaf spot is a fungal plant disease caused by the pathogen Zimmermaniella trispora. It is a specific type of infection that typically manifests on the foliage of tropical plants, disrupting their normal physiological functions and overall health.

The primary host for this fungus is the mango tree (Mangifera indica). The pathogen selectively attacks the leaves, creating distinct localized structures that impede the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently.

Symptoms are easily identified by the presence of small, raised, circular lesions that resemble a hardened crust. As the infection progresses, these spots often coalesce, forming larger necrotic patches across the leaf surface. The affected areas become brittle, dark brown, or black, significantly altering the leaf's texture and appearance.

The development and spread of this disease are heavily favored by humid, tropical conditions. The presence of free moisture on leaves from rain or high humidity levels facilitates the germination and dispersal of fungal spores. Poor canopy ventilation within the orchard significantly accelerates the spread of the pathogen between adjacent trees.

The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it leads to premature leaf drop and a reduction in the plant's photosynthetic capacity. This exhaustion of the tree results in lower fruit yields and diminished quality of the harvest. Severely infected trees show reduced vigor and susceptibility to secondary infections.

Management and prevention focus on maintaining orchard hygiene and chemical control. Growers are advised to prune and dispose of infected leaves and twigs to reduce the primary inoculum load. Application of copper-based or systemic fungicides during the onset of the growing season is essential for suppressing the development of the fungus in high-risk environments.
