Description

Cryphonectria carpinicola is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing canker diseases on hornbeam trees (Carpinus species). This ascomycete fungus colonizes the bark and cambial layers of the host, leading to disrupted nutrient and water transport within the tree, which can significantly weaken or eventually kill the affected specimens.

The host range is primarily restricted to hornbeam trees. The fungus acts as a necrotrophic parasite, showing increased virulence in trees already suffering from environmental stress, such as drought, frost damage, or nutrient imbalances in the soil.

Symptoms typically include sunken, necrotic lesions on the bark that eventually expand into perennial cankers. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of stroma — small, cushion-like fruiting bodies that erupt through the bark surface, usually appearing in orange to yellow hues during periods of high humidity.

The spread of the disease is facilitated by wind-blown spores and rain splash, which transport the fungus to new hosts. Wounds on the bark, whether caused by insects, wildlife, or human maintenance activities, serve as primary entry points for the pathogen to establish its mycelial colonies.

Disease management requires a multi-faceted approach. Key strategies include the removal and destruction of heavily infected branches or entire trees to reduce the inoculum load, improving general site sanitation, and avoiding unnecessary bark damage during landscape management. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil nutrition is also critical for long-term survival.
