The Cryphonectriaceae family consists of a group of ascomycetous fungi that act as significant plant pathogens, primarily causing necrosis and cankers on the stems and trunks of woody plants. The most prominent member of this family is Cryphonectria parasitica, the causal agent of the devastating chestnut blight. These fungi thrive within the bark and cambial tissues, disrupting the flow of water and essential nutrients throughout the tree.
The primary hosts for these pathogens include members of the Fagaceae family, such as chestnuts, oaks, and beeches. Additionally, species within the family can infect other hardwood trees like eucalyptus. These fungi are capable of causing widespread damage in natural forests, professional nurseries, and landscape plantings across various climatic zones.
Symptoms of infestation typically manifest as sunken or swollen cankers on the bark, accompanied by discoloration, cracking, and eventual necrosis of the tissue. As the fungus progresses, it may girdle the stem or branches, leading to a sudden wilting of leaves and the death of all parts of the tree located above the site of the infection.
The development and spread of these fungi are highly favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures. Spores are primarily disseminated via wind, rain splashes, and insect or bird vectors. Entry points for the infection are usually provided by mechanical wounds, frost cracks, or sites damaged by wood-boring insects, where the mycelium can easily penetrate the tree's internal structures.
The economic and ecological impact of these pathogens is severe, as they can lead to the total destruction of susceptible tree stands. Management and prevention strategies include:

- Sterilization of pruning tools between uses to prevent mechanical spread.
