Description
The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Cryptocline taxicola, which primarily targets plants of the Taxus genus. As a specialized pathogen, it colonizes the needles and young stems, completing its lifecycle by forming fruiting bodies known as conidial stromata on the underside of the needles.
The primary host for this pathogen is the English yew (Taxus baccata) and its cultivars. The disease is most prevalent in dense, poorly ventilated plantings, nurseries, and botanical gardens where high plant density restricts air movement, creating a microclimate suitable for the fungus to thrive.
Initial symptoms include the appearance of small, brown, or yellowish spots on the underside of the needles. As the fungus progresses, the needles turn brown, wither, and drop prematurely. Close examination reveals ruptures in the needle epidermis, where the fungus releases its spores, which is a diagnostic feature of the infection.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity, frequent rainfall, and mild temperatures are critical for the development and spread of Cryptocline taxicola. Spores are primarily disseminated by water splashes and wind currents, facilitating the infection of healthy foliage nearby. Dense canopy structures exacerbate this by retaining moisture for longer periods.
The damage caused by this blight significantly reduces the aesthetic value of the yew, leading to sparse foliage and bare branches. Prolonged infection stresses the plant, making it more susceptible to secondary pests and environmental stressors. Effective management is essential to prevent severe defoliation and maintain the long-term health of the yew specimens.
