Description
Cryptodiscus canker is a fungal infection caused by the ascomycete Cryptodiscus rhopaloides. This pathogen specifically targets the bark and cambium of woody plants, interfering with the vascular system and often resulting in the necrosis of the affected stems, branches, or trunks.
The disease primarily affects various deciduous species, notably those within the Salicaceae family, such as willows and poplars. These trees become particularly susceptible when their natural defenses are lowered by environmental stress, poor nutrition, or previous physical damage to the bark, providing an entry point for fungal spores.
The visual symptoms typically include discolored or sunken areas of the bark. As the mycelium grows beneath the surface, the bark may crack, exposing the wood underneath. In later stages, small, fruiting bodies of the fungus emerge, appearing as tiny raised structures that rupture through the periderm, serving as a primary indicator of the disease's active progress.
The spread of Cryptodiscus rhopaloides is heavily dependent on moisture. Spores are dispersed through wind and splashing rain, landing on susceptible bark surfaces. Moist, humid conditions allow the spores to germinate and colonize the tissue, while the fungus effectively overwinters in dead bark or dormant cankers on infected branches, ready to spread again when weather conditions improve.
The damage caused by this pathogen can lead to severe branch dieback and, if the canker girdles the main stem, the eventual death of the entire tree. To manage and prevent the spread of the disease, consider the following agronomic practices:
