Cryptomonas erosa is a genus of unicellular flagellate algae that significantly impacts aquatic environments. While not a direct pathogen to terrestrial crops, it is recognized as a key indicator of water quality degradation, affecting agricultural water sources and sophisticated hydroponic greenhouse systems.

The organism acts as a primary producer in aquatic ecosystems, but its excessive proliferation causes a form of "water illness" known as blooming. This process can alter the pH balance and oxygen levels of irrigation water, potentially stressing sensitive plant species and clogging irrigation nozzles and circulation pipes.
