Cryptosphaeria is a genus of ascomycetous fungi known for causing bark necrosis and stem cankers on various woody plant species. As a plant pathogen, it primarily colonizes the bark and cambium layers, leading to the decay of vascular tissues. The fungus is often associated with the decline of specific forest trees, particularly when they are already weakened by environmental stressors.

The host range of Cryptosphaeria includes several deciduous trees, most notably poplars, aspens, and other related species. In forest ecosystems and urban landscapes, this fungus can cause significant economic loss by reducing timber quality and leading to the premature death of ornamental or industrial trees if not properly monitored.

Symptoms of the disease usually manifest as depressed, discolored lesions on the bark that often expand over time. As the infection progresses, the inner bark and underlying wood may show signs of necrosis.
