The disease primarily affects species within the Populus genus, particularly native and introduced poplars. It is an important pathogen in both forestry and urban arboriculture, as it can significantly affect the health and structural integrity of mature trees and young saplings alike.

Symptoms typically manifest as depressed cankers on the branches and main trunks of the host tree. Over time, the bark surface displays characteristic cracking and peeling, revealing underlying necrosis of the cambium layer.
