Description
Cryptosporella is a genus of ascomycetous fungi responsible for various canker and dieback diseases in woody plants. One of its most recognized forms is the pathogen Cryptosporella viticola, which is a major causal agent of dead-arm disease in vineyards. This fungus attacks the plant vascular system, leading to necrosis and significant yield loss.
The disease primarily impacts viticulture, affecting grapevines across various regions. The fungus targets all parts of the plant, including shoots, leaves, fruit clusters, and older woody parts like trunks and cordons. While grapes are the primary hosts, some species of the genus can be found on other hardwood trees, causing stunted growth and branch death.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, irregular black spots on young shoots during the early spring growth phase. As the shoots lengthen, these lesions often tear open the bark, resulting in characteristic scarring and deep cankers. In severe cases, the infected wood becomes brittle, and the vascular tissue is damaged, leading to the wilting and eventual death of the affected branches.
The spread of the fungus is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures. The pathogen survives the winter in infected bark tissues and debris. When favorable conditions occur, spores are disseminated by rain splash, wind, or contaminated pruning tools, facilitating the infection of new, healthy plant tissues.
Effective management of Cryptosporella relies on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. This includes regular sanitation, such as removing and destroying infected wood during dormancy to eliminate the inoculum source. Improving vineyard canopy management to enhance airflow and using preventative fungicide applications at the correct phenological stages are critical steps in minimizing the disease impact and protecting crop health.
