Description
Cryptosporium refers to a genus of fungi causing necrotic lesions on various woody plants and shrubs. As a plant pathogen, it primarily targets the bark and the underlying cambium layer, leading to localized tissue death and potential systemic damage to the host plant if the infection remains unchecked.
The host range is diverse, often affecting broad-leaved trees like willow, poplar, and birch, as well as various ornamental and orchard species. The pathogen exploits weak points in the plant's defense system, such as wounds caused by hail, frost, or improper pruning, to establish its initial colonization.
Symptomatology typically includes the formation of discolored patches on the bark, followed by cracks, lesions, or sunken areas. As the disease progresses, the reproductive structures of the fungus, known as acervuli or conidiomata, appear as tiny dark bumps on the bark surface. These structures eventually rupture, releasing spores that can spread the infection further.
The development of the disease is heavily reliant on environmental factors. High humidity and mild temperatures are ideal for spore germination and colonization. In dense plantations or neglected orchards, the disease can spread rapidly through wind dispersal and splashing rain, especially when trees are weakened by environmental stress or poor site management.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is the most critical measure; all infected branches must be pruned back to healthy wood and removed from the site to minimize inoculum pressure. Furthermore, applying protective fungicide sprays during the dormant season and disinfecting pruning tools after every cut significantly reduces the risk of further infection.
